The Right Used Car for You

We live in a mobile world now more than ever, and it is important that people have the ability to get from place to place to work, get educated, and stay in touch with their loved ones. Unfortunately for many people, the cost of buying a new automobile can be excessive. Thankfully there are many options for great used automobiles that can be had at all price ranges.

The biggest challenge with buying a car is knowing when you have a great deal on your hands. There are many things to consider when looking at buying another car. We at Auto City Credit have compiled a few tips to keep in mind when looking to buy a used vehicle.

  • WHAT DO YOU WANT/NEED? They are very different things. We would all like to have a super sporty car with all the bells and whistles, but that may not be practical. The first step in shopping for a used vehicle is being realistic about what you absolutely must have. Do you have a family? You need something with ample room. Do you travel a lot for business or pleasure? You want a vehicle that gets great gas mileage. Knowing your needs prior to shopping for a vehicle will help narrow what can be a tedious search.
  • WHAT CAN YOU COMFORTABLY AFFORD TO PAY? This goes hand and hand with the above statement. Knowing your monthly budget will allow us to help steer your shopping. Maybe you do need the room an SUV or a Mini-van provides, but you may be able to do without the sunroof and heated seats if it means getting you where you can afford to be. Know your budget before you start shopping and stick to it. This will help avoid an unpleasant visit from the repo man!
  • SHOPPING AROUND: It can be very easy to find a car and fall instantly in love with it. Remember, there are literally thousands of cars out there waiting for new owners and the next one could be even better. Make sure to take the time to shop around whether by researching different makes and models and talking to your dealership. Once you have a good idea of what is out there to meet your budget and your needs, you’ll be in a better place to make a decision on a car you’ll be happy with and will treat you right.
  • TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE: This may seem an obvious step, but you would be surprised at the number of people who purchase a vehicle from either a dealership, private owner, or the internet without giving it a proper test drive. Even if you are one of the many people who don’t know anything about auto mechanics, a test drive can give you hints toward future problems. If the vehicle doesn’t feel right, you don’t want to buy it.
  • CHECK THE HISTORY: Now more than ever it is easy to check the history on a used vehicle. Services such as CarFax or checking the VIN (vehicle identification number) versus records for floods, accidents, etc. to see what it may be through. Avoid used vehicles that have been through the proverbial ringer because they will more than likely cause you problems in the future.

These are just a few tips that can help you make the right used vehicle purchase. If you take the time to do a thorough search for a used vehicle, it can treat you well for many, many years.
